Amuze Art Lecture #14 discusses The Fighting Temeraire by J. M. W. Turner in the National Gallery in London. In 2005, this painting was voted the greatest painting in Britain, based on a poll by BBC Radio 4 that received over 100.000 votes. There are a several reasons for the popularity of this painting. 
  1. It is an innovative painting by Turner, whose artistic style was ahead of his time.
  2. It is painted by the most popular British painter. Most works by Turner are on display in England, which has contributed significantly to his popularity among the British.
  3. The shiop played a significant role in Britain's history. The ship and its people fought heroically in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, as well as the Battle of Trafalgar.
